He looks the part, bub, but will this be a neutered modern audience take on the character despite the gore?

The first footage of Marvel's Wolverine were shown off yesterday, and if you're a fan of gore, well, then you were in luck, as there was a lot of it. The game, which is being developed by Insomniac, certainly looks the part of a Wolverine game. Take a peek for yourself and see Logan in all his blood-soaked glory:

Claws, berserker rage, a flannel shirt—three checkmarks for nailing the look and feel of the ol' Canucklehead, albeit the focus on gore is arguably more of a nod to the post-Logan and Deadpool/Wolverine era of the character as depicted on the silver screen. Actor Liam McIntyrewill be portraying Logan in the game and seems thrilled to be tackling the part. Still, for all the footage seems to get right, there's a very big question mark about what the story is going to be like.

The concern stems from two factors: Insomniac's insufferable writing in Spider-Man 2 and the presence of consulting firm Sweet Baby Inc. The latter is notorious for its insertion of political messaging and far-left activism; so much so that an entire website has sprung up dedicated to pointing out games that were created by companies like Sweet Baby. In short, with a character that is as traditionally masculine as Logan, it feels like the sort of personalities involved in creating this game might struggle to authentically portray him, no matter how much blood is spilled throughout the adventure.

Here's the lowdown on the plot straight from the press release:

In this global thriller, Wolverine’s search for answers will send him on perilous excursions to exotic locales, including the island nation of Madripoor, the frosted wilderness of Canada, and the narrow city streets of Tokyo – all potential battlegrounds for fierce, bloody, destructive action.

Marvel's Wolverine will come to PlayStation 5 in the fall of 2026. As we learn more about the game and its plot we'll be sure to share it with all of you. In the interim, debate among yourselves the odds of getting a proper, authentic take on Wolverine that will reflect the character's history in the comics. Fingers crossed!
