Rumor: Killzone Might Be Getting a Remake

The 2004 original could come back in one form or another.

Once considered to be a potential Halo-killer, Guerilla Games' Killzone launched on PlayStation 2 back in 22004 and, while it wasn't quite the juggernaut Sony was hoping for, the game would go on to spawn multiple sequels and its own devoted following. However, where once Killzone was a staple on PlayStation consoles, the series' last entry was 2013's Killzone Shadow Fall on PlayStation 4. Since then, Guerilla Games has been focused on its series of Horizon games and Killzone has remained dormant.

Of late, it's come to be known that Horizon spinoff game Horizon Hunters Gathering, a live service co-op game, has been going through a hellish development. The most recent build was apparently excoriated by testers, resulting in Sony instructing Guerilla to remove all live service elements and turn the game into a more traditional co-op adventure. What does that have to do with Killzone, you might ask? Well, apparently Killzone is now taking priority over not just Hunters Gathering, but also Horizon 3.

It's an interesting move, one that is likely a response to how poorly Hunters Gathering was received. Going from a live service title to a traditional co-op game would seem to be a signal that Sony doesn't have much faith in the title, but after so much time invested in the project, the company doesn't want to pull the plug and take a financial hit. Thus, bringing back Killzone, which arguably could be a better fit for live service integration if Sony is still angling in that direction, makes sense.

Guerilla is apparently being joined by an external developer to get Killzone and Horizon Hunters Gatherers out the gates in a timely fashion, Then, the studio's attention will shift to Horizon 3 and whatever lies beyond. This is all scuttlebutt for now, but as we learn more, we'll share it with all of you.
