Is Marvel's replacement for Kang enough to keep fans interested?
Well, who had this one on their 2024 bingo card? San Diego Comic-Con took place over the past few days, and one of the biggest moments of the show was Marvel Studios revealing that Robert Downey, Jr. would be returning to the MCU. If you thought he would be back as Iron Man, however, you might be shocked to hear that it's as an entirely different character: Dr. Doom.
"How is that supposed to work?" is the question uttered by many a fan in response to this news. As of now, it's not clear how this will work, although the likely answer is that Downey will be a version of the character from the multiverse. However, does that mean he'll be Tony Stark as Doom? Victor von Doom but with the same face as Stark? Fans will have to wait two years to find out, apparently, as Downey declared during the reveal, flanked by Doombots no less, that he will appear at that time as the character in the newly-rechristened Avengers: Doomsday.
It's a strange move, certainly, but given the wild success of Deadpool & Wolverine at the box office, Marvel Studios might have its groove back and, thus, the cache to pull this one off. It was also necessary to move on from the former big-bad of the MCU, Kang, whose actor Jonathan Majors was found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and was promptly jettisoned from the role. With such a huge vacuum left in Majors' wake, Marvel Studios needed to act—time will tell if it pays off.
