Another From the Ashes book is on its way, but will it have any staying power?
Marvel Comics' From the Ashes reboot of the X-Men line has been shaky since it kicked off earlier this month. The first issue of X-Men was okay, but it also wasn't very new-reader friendly and had too many vestiges of the Krakoa era to satisfy fans who have wanted to get away from that concept as a whole for years now. Phoenix #1 and NYX #1 were similarly unremarkable additions. Now, we have word from Marvel via San Diego Comic-Con that Psylocke will be the next character to get a solo series, helmed by writer Alyssa Wong and artist Vincenzo Carratù. Psylocke #1 launches November 13, 2o24.
Here's the synopsis from Marvel:
She was made for violence! Trained to be an assassin since birth, Kwannon chose to be an X-Man. But there are still some jobs too dirty for the X-Men. And some paths have to be walked alone. When the mission is brutal, Psylocke unsheathes her blades to punish those who prey on mutants. Exploding out of the pages of X-Men, join Psylocke into the underbelly of the Marvel Universe, carving out her own place in a world that would rather see her under control!
To be fair, that's not a terrible sounding hook for the series. The problem? Alyssa Wong hasn't produced anything of late that is very interesting or worth reading. Wong's run on Deadpool landed with a thud, as has Captain Marvel. Why should anyone think Psylocke will be any different? Still, Carratù has some talent, and so long as Wong can deliver straightforward stories that deliver on this premise, maybe Kwannon will have a shot at being a solo star.
