PlayStation 5 Pro Launches in November

The powerful new console comes with a correspondingly hefty price tag.

Towards the end of last month, rumors about an impending PlayStation 5 Pro coming from Sony later this year had begun once again to swirl. Today, what was rumor has now become reality, as PS5 Pro is indeed a thing, a thing that will come to stores digital-only with a separate disc drive that can be purchased and attached to the system. Here's the presentation from lead architect Mark Cerny:

So, what does the staggering $699.99 MSRP net consumers? Here are the three big changes coming with PS5 Pro:

  • Larger GPU, which can render graphics up to 45% faster than a baseline PS5

  • Advanced ray tracing that works two and sometimes even three times faster than on a baseline PS5

  • PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which is AI-driven upscaling that can enhance the resolution and detail in graphics substantially

PS5 Pro will also come with 2TBs of storage. As the updated hardware makes plain, improved performance is a big part of the goal for PS5 Pro. Cerny states during the presentation that a majority of players, when given the option between fidelity or performance modes in a game, prefer the latter to the former. The goal is to close this divide and allow players the luxury of both options simultaneously.

Multiple games are either in development and will eventually launch with PS5 Pro upgrades, such as Assassin's Creed Shadows or will eventually be patched to take advantage of the console's enhancing capabilities, such as Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth. No timeline was given on when these updates will arrive, but more details will likely begin to trickle out as we get closer to the November 7, 2024 launch of PS5 Pro.

If there's any downside to PS5 Pro, it's that price tag. $700 is a big ask even in the best of times, but with the market as it is now and so many people struggling to make ends meet, Sony is positioning PS5 Pro as a luxury item. Whether or not that will pan out remains to be seen, but we'll start to get an idea once the console launches in a couple of months..
