Things kick off with an adventure right after Steve was thawed from the ice.

Things didn't go so well for Chip Zdarsky's Batman run, but the writer is hoping for a rebound with a return to Marvel and a new solo series to tackle: Captain America. Following J. Michael Straczynski's unremarkable turn with the character, Zdarsky is looking to inject some life into the series with a new direction. He'll be joined by artist Valerio Schiti with Ben Harvey taking care of covers, and Frank Martin on colors.

The series is set to explore the tiny gap in time between when the Avengers pulled Steve Rogers from his icy suspended animation and his official joining of the team. Zdarsky will promptly return to the present following this adventure, but will carry over a threat that is introduced during the flashback. Here is the official solicit:

While Captain America slumbered in ice, the world changed - for better and for worse. Steve Rogers awakens to a reality where battles are fought in the shadows through secrets and subterfuge, and villains aren't so easy to identify. When a fledgling dictator named Victor Von Doom conquers Latveria, Steve faces a critical decision: adapt to a new kind of warfare, or forge his own path? And what will the choice he makes in the past mean for his future? Experience the untold tale of Captain America's first encounter with Doctor Doom!

Marvel also has a preview (unlettered) which you can view right here:

Some pretty art, certainly, and the premise is promising, but will Zdarsky be able to stick the landing? Zdarsky has written a compelling Steve Rogers in the past (Avengers: Twilight comes readily to mind), but as demonstrated in his Batman run, he can sometimes miss the mark. Here's hoping that Steve finally get a book worth reading again come July.
