Star Milly Alcock's toxic attitude towards fans hasn't helped.

James Gunn's DCU has been something of a disappointment, to put things mildly. Early projects like Creature Commandos and the first season of Peacemaker were innocuous releases that didn't exactly get fans chomping at the bit for more. When Superman debuted last year, it met with mostly positive reviews from critics (we liked it well enough, ourselves), but ultimately fell short of Warner Bros.' sales projections (as noted under oath before congress by Netflix CEO Ted Serandos). And right after that? An R-rated season two of Peacemaker rife with sexual and violent content that, despite Gunn's claims of it being an essential followup for viewers, was largely inaccessible to anyone but an adult audience. Which, all told, is a weird move for what is ostensibly supposed to be a family brand when it comes to DC.

Now, the next film coming from Gunn's team is Supergirl, featuring a drunken cynic in place of the more bubbly, likable version of Kara Zor-El that fans know and love. And hey, it could very well work—the movie releases on Thursday and fans might just end up taking to this "messy" version of the character. Box office prognosticators, however, are not so positive, projecting Supergirl to stumble out of the gates with a paltry $38-$51 million opening weekend. It's believed that Toy Story 5, which had a roaring success of an opening last week, will remain on top.

While there are many factors to consider as to why Supergirl might underperform, there's no denying that star Milly Alcock hasn't helped matters. Her hostile attitude towards fans, including sweeping claims of misogyny, a dismissive attitude towards so-called conservatives, and claims about Supergirl's sexual identity that don't line up with the character's history, have done little to endear her to moviegoers. Alcock has come across as abrasive to many fans throughout the press tour for Supergirl, leading some to question if she was the right actress for the job.

Many pop culture commentators have weighed in on Supergirl. From Grace Randolph to Critical Drinker, there have been a lot of takes on the movie leading up to its launch. Some online personalities are even feuding with other pundits over Supergirl, such as YouTuber Angry Joe trying to call out Az from HeelVsBabyface and Nerdrotic for levying criticism towards the film. It's quite a lot of drama, but then, Supergirl has planted itself smack in the middle of the culture wars, so it's to be expected. However, despite all the talk, it's growing clear that there simply isn't much excitement for Supergirl from everyday moviegoers.

We'll see what the final numbers end up being for Supergirl after this weekend.
