As many predicted, Toy Story 5 dominated the box office in its second weekend.

Supergirl was not tracking well as the film headed into its opening weekend. Now, it's being reported that the prognostications of doom were right on the tiny pile of money as Supergirl only managed to earn $38 million domestically during its opening weekend. By contrast, Toy Story 5, an animated film now in its second weekend, pulled $70 million. Supergirl is being ravaged by fans, as well as independent critics (Critical Drinker's take can be watched, below). Meanwhile, activist mainstream critics and online pundits are helping prop up the critic score; make of that what you will, but it's all pretty par for the course when it comes to female-led superhero movies.

Deadline has a particularly hilarious article blaming the film's failure on everything from men (who largely outpaced the attendance of female viewers, mind you) to COVID to "Super" fatigue because, wait for it, Superman came out last year. It's all nonsense, of course; when done right, everyone, both men and women, will show up for a female-led superhero film. Look no further than Wonder Woman, for instance. And the COVID excuse is beyond dead at this point, as countless films still lure audiences to theaters in the years since the pandemic wrapped. It's pretty simple to figure out why Supergirl flopped: don't make bad films, don't attack fans, and moviegoers will support you.

Supergirl is largely being panned for a poor performance by star Milly Alcock, an unlikable take on the character of Supergirl, a weak story, and some underwhelming CGI, among other issues. With Minions & Monsters on the way this week, followed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day after that, Supergirl doesn't look long for this world as theaters move to fill screens with movies that audiences actually want to see. We'll keep you posted.
