HeelvsBabyface, Critical Drinker, Mauler, and more.

Eric July's Rippaverse has garnered quite a large following over the past three years. These crowdfunded comics feature old school heroes in straightforward stories devoid of a lot of the modern day politicking that has infested mainstream publishers like Marvel and DC. In fairness, the quality can be hit or miss, but if your're looking for an alternative to the big two, Rippaverse is totally an option.

Not only that, but July's company also offers a number of creators who have fallen out of the good graces of the mainstream or who simply want to do something new and original a shot to produce work. Legendary writers like Chuck Dixon are regularly featured in July's projects, and now he's giving a chance to some folks who are brand new to the industry. If you're a fan of YouTube comics, video game, and pop culture streamers like Critical Drinker, you might be surprised by the talent coming to Saints & Sinners #1.

Here are the writers onboard for the issue:

  • HeelvsBabyface

  • Jay David

  • Eric July

  • Callum Edmunds (Mauler)

  • The Soska Sisters

  • Will Jordan (Critical Drinker)

The standouts here are HeelvsBabyface, Mauler/Callum Edmunds, and Critical Drinker/Will Jordan, who are all writing their first comic book stories for this collection. Joining them on art will be Diogenes Neves, Cris Bolson, Elias Martins, Will Conrad, Cliff Richards, and Carlos Reno.

Saints & Sinners is a short-story collection that clocks in at 100 pages. Rippaverse books, like many crowdfunded comics, aren't traditional single issue floppies like some might think. The books are usually more in line with a trade paperback, with a heck of a lot more than 22 pages to read. Here's what the solicit says to expect from the story:

Step into the gray area between heroes and villains with the first-ever Rippaverse anthology. Saints & Sinners delivers six explosive short stories that expand the universe with new characters, unforgettable moments, and morally complex narratives. From soldiers with forgotten pasts to reapers walking among us, this collection dives deep into power, purpose, and the eternal battle between good and evil.

The campaign has already surpassed $250,000 and continues to climb. It will close on July 18, 2025, so you have plenty of time to get a pre-order in (with a variety of different covers and options to choose from) at this link. If you've long grown tired of what Marvel and DC have been doing of late, the Rippaverse might offer an alternative that fits you. Give them a look.
