Many are planning to leave the brand entirely as a result of the decision.

Sony recently made waves when it announced the end of the physical production of PlayStation dics would be coming in January of 2028. For a period of time following that announcement, Sony went radio silent on its PlayStation social media accounts, presumably in an effort to mitigate unhappy comments under its posts. Recently, the communications blackout came to an end and Sony made a post... which currently has over 67,000 comments, the majority of which are crying out to complain.
A bunch of PlayStation posts were met with a similar reactions across social media, and now, PlayStation news website Push Square has run a poll asking fans what this transition away from physical media will mean for their support of the brand. The results? Not good. Of 6,500 people polled, 45% stated they would be transitioning to PC rather than stick with PlayStation. Of those polled, 15% said they'd already switch to PC. 23% of people polled stated that they would be sticking with PlayStation.
That's a small sample size, relatively speaking, but given Push Square is a dedicated PlayStation news site, it would be unwise to completely dismiss the results. It's worth noting that Sony recently had the worst PlayStation sales in 26 years this past May following a price increase of its PS5 family of hardware. Will the death of discs mean the death of PlayStation? It's hard to say, but if nothing else, fans are being loud across the Internet of nothing else.
Consumers ultimately vote with their wallets, however, and if they aren't currently supporting physical media there's little incentive for Sony or any other game producer to keep discs around. We'll see how this shakes out in the weeks and months to come.
