The star was happy with his check and had fun filming, but also feels for the directors.
Michael Keaton returned as the Caped Crusader for 2023's The Flash, but he was set to return as Batman in another film, as well: Batgirl. Alas, while the abortive Flash movie did make its way to cinemas, Batgirl was scrapped by Warner Bros. in 2022. DC Studios co-chair Peter Safran said at the time that the film was "not releasable," resulting in a plethora of keyboard warriors to get up in arms over the decision to axe Batgirl. All of the Internet grumbling hasn't amounted to much, as the movie remains unfinished and unseen, but a new comment by Michael Keaton has people talking about Batgirl once more.
In a new interview, when asked about reprising the role of Bruce Wayne for Batgirl and his performance ultimately not making it to the silver screen, Keaton said he "didn't care one way or another" and that making the movie was "big, fun, nice check." However, Keaton went on to say that he felt "very badly" for the Batgirl directing duo of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. "I want them to succeed, and I think they felt very badly, and that made me feel bad. Me? I’m good."
It sounds like a perfectly reasonable reaction from Keaton, but there are likely many a pundit disturbed that the actor didn't consider the cancellation of Batgirl to be one of the greatest tragedies of modern times. Or something. In reality, it was a film destined to fail owing to poor quality in Warner Bros.' estimation, and who knows, maybe even Keaton had a sense that Batgirl wasn't all that great. Fans will likely never know, as the film doesn't appear as though it will ever be made available to the public. But hey, good for Keaton being honest and keeping it real.
