Kept you hating, huh?

In a world as divided as the one in which we currently reside, it's rather heartwarming to see so many fans come together in their hatred of generative AI. The technology has been on most fans' naughty list for the past few years as cheapskate companies scramble to replace every human worker they can with it. In creative industries like game development, AI has become particularly disliked. So why Hideo Kojima thought it would be a good idea to produce a short video using AI is rather bewildering, yet that's exactly what he did.

Debuting at the Cannes Film Festival in France, and made in collaboration with Nicolas Winding Refn, Satellites II sees the Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding visionary setting off into space. The content of the film is rather benign, and also sees the developer living, in a way, his dream of suiting up and traveling through the cosmos. However, the use of generative AI to create the six-minute movie has killed virtually any enthusiasm that fans might have had for the project.
Access media outlets are parroting "AI slop" in their headlines, as are many of the people commenting on social media. To be reasonable, though, it's an apt descriptor for a method of "filmmaking" that is very much deserving of derision. For someone whose works have been lovingly, arguably even obsessively crafted from scratch in the past, it is decidedly disappointing to see Kojima be so tone deaf. In fairness to the man, he is a lover of bleeding-edge technology, so the appeal of fooling around with it is understandable, but to put is plainly, now ain't the time.
