Fans have taken to the Internet to show off examples of what they believe to be copying.
Tracing is nothing new in the world of comic books. Artists work under strict deadlines, and when a scene gets particularly dense with details, particularly cityscapes, sometimes the old lightbox has to get whipped out for a quick assist. However, where many fans draw the line is outright copying (or swiping, as it's known) of other artists' work as well as the use of AI art. These are big no-nos for comic book illustrators, and unfortunately for Phoenix artist Alessandro Miracolo, fans allege that he is guilty of the former.
Flipping through Phoenix #1 by Miracolo and writer Stephanie Phillips, many fans have spotted what they believe are swipes of numerous comic book panels from across multiple different books. No single source was utilized, but recreations of art by Olivier Coipel, Stuart Immonen, and others have been pointed out onl. You can see the comparisons above which were compiled by a fan named Dylan Carter on Facebook. The evidence certainly looks convincing, with some shots almost exactly the same as the reference, while others have small changes made.
No word from Marvel on the issue, but Miracolo has made his X account private. while his Instagram profile still appears to be public. It's an odd state of affairs, but hopefully Marvel and/or Miracolo can help straighten things out. This certainly isn't the first time fans have seen artists swiping one another's work. Roger Cruz made some waves in the '90s when Joe Madureira alleged Cruz was copying him, even going so far as to include the headline "Cruz Swipes Again" in the background of an issue of Uncanny X-Men (Brian Cronin of CBR did a great piece on this historic bit of comic book controversy). We'll keep you posted on any future developments.
