"I wonder who on earth would complain if we made them male and female."
Fans have been mulling for a long time now over the censorship that Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is being subjected to. The most obvious and egregious change has been to legendary artist Akira Toriyama's designs, with female characters being covered up to show less skin in a weirdly puritanical fashion. The traditional male or female paradigm for the player character has also been jettisoned in favor of a "Type A" and "Type B" option. There are other alterations, as well, and much of it was discussed in a recent interview with Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii:
Horii was interviewed during Tokyo Game Show and had much to say on the topic, as well as the broader censorship of Japanese media in the West, including manga. Here are a couple of the more interesting comments from Horii during the exchange:
"The idea of sex education that comes from religious concepts from the West is in America, right? Their idea of compliance is really narrow. When publishing comics over there, you have to separate them by age. If it’s a Shonen Jump manga, you can’t publish it unless it’s 13 years old or older. You have to do all the retakes. You have to take out insurance in case of a lawsuit. It’s really troublesome. That’s why Japan is also badly influenced by that."
"You can choose a male or female protagonist, but you can’t say that you choose a man or a woman. They are Type 1 and Type 2. I wonder who on earth would complain if we made them male and female. I don’t know."
While people's opinions will vary on Horii's sentiments, there is no doubt that censorship has become rampant within the video game industry. This is particularly true when it comes to things like remakes and remasters, where developers will alter and remove content, as well as put things like so-called trigger warnings that typically degrade and demean the original work. How censorship will impact the reception of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake when it launches on November 14, 2024.
