Valve's Steam Machine Starting Price is $1049

And that doesn't even net you a terabyte of storage.



Back at the end of May, Valve revealed that it would be raising prices for its range of Steam Deck handhelds. A Steam Deck OLED with 512GB of memory went from $549 all the way up to $789. That was a steep increase, and with word that the Steam Controller would be selling for $99 apiece, fans wondered what all of this would mean for the upcoming Steam Machine consoles coming from the company. Now, they know: the cheapest price for a Steam Machine is going to be $1049.

The pricing is atrocious, but the excuse is, as it was for the Steam Deck increase, that AI is making prices for components go through the roof. Valve isn't interested in taking any kind of a loss on the hardware and recouping it with software sales, so Steam Machine is going to be a pretty premium purchase for most consumers. This means that it's unlikely that Steam Machine will be all that competitive or disruptive within the console space, as even the most expensive PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series consoles are still quite a bit cheaper than Valve's offering.



If you're interested in buying a Steam Machine, you'll have to register at this link. The deadline is June 10, 2026 at 10 AM PST, after which Valve will run a lottery to place people in a queue for purchase. The goal here being to, hopefully, keep scalpers at bay, although how much money a scalper expects to make buying a thousand dollar game console is anyone's guess. For what it's worth, early reviews of the hardware have been positive, so perhaps, despite the cost, Steam Machine will find its place in the market.


That said, keep in mind that Steam Machine isn't just a gaming console, as it can also be utilized like a PC. However, given its positioning as a console and PC, the question is whether either crowd will be properly satisfied by what Steam Machine can do.
