A surprise Nintendo Direct broadcast spilled the details on the worst lept secret in gaming!

It's been a rumor for months now that Nintendo would be launching a Star Fox game at some point this summer. Well, rumor has become fact as Nintendo stealth dropped one of its Direct broadcasts this week, this time dedicating the entire broadcast to its upcoming fifth relaunch of the Star Fox franchise. On June 25, 2026, fans will be able to play Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2. The Direct is down below, if you'd like to see the game in motion.

Brace yourself, but Nintendo has decided to remake Star Fox 64... again. This is the fifth time that Nintendo has done this: Star Fox 64 is itself a remake of the original SNES Star Fox, while Star Fox 64 3DS was a remake of the N64 version, and Star Fox Zero was a remake of the N64 version yet again. That's a whole lot of Star Fox 64.

This time around, though, fans can look forward to a number of changes. The visuals have been totally overhauled and given a grittier, even more realistic sheen than ever before. The characters, too, have been revamped, sporting a more animalistic look than before. Nintendo is throwing in mouse controls, but the real news worth writing home about is that players will be able to use the Switch wireless Nintendo 64 controller to play the game.

There's multiplayer (Battle Mode), there's co-cop, and there are even AR Filter avatars for Switch 2 video chat that will actually map Star Fox characters onto the face of the person who is speaking (and can be used in other games). Finally, Challenge Mode lets players replay completed stages but with new objectives to complete, including ones not found in the single player campaign.

It's all pretty exciting stuff for fans of the series, which has seen a resurgence in popularity and notability in the wake of Fox McCloud's cameo appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Will you be giving this new Star Fox a play this summer? Share with us on social media!
