The surprise announcement was made during yesterday's Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase.
In the latest installment of, "was [insert outlandish thing here] on your bingo card for 2024?" we have the impending arrival of Yakuza Kiwami on... Nintendo Switch?! Yes, beloved Japanese mobster series is finally making its debut on Nintendo's hybrid console. It's a move that will surely elicit a raised eyebrow or two given how Ryu Ga Gotoku studio head and Yakuza executive producer Masayoshi Yokoyama notoriously declared that having the series on Nintendo's family-friendly platform would be a detriment to its "underground" credibility.
Apparently SEGA doesn't feel the same way, as Yakuza Kiwami is set to launch on Nintendo Switch on October 24, 2024. Although not quite as beloved as Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami is still an excellent game in its own right. A remake of the original 2007 PlayStation 2 debut of the series, Kiwami casts players as mobster-with-a-heart-of-gold Kazuma Kiryu. Kiryu is embroiled in a mystery that will send him all over the seedy world of Kamurocho, a fictional take on the real-world Japanese district of Kabukicho.
Set in an entertainment and red light district, this colorful locale, along with Kiryu's charisma and the series' tight, nuanced combat system, have made Yakuza into a legend in the world of video games. If you've yet to experience Kiwami, you'll get the chance to on Nintendo Switch in just a couple of months.
