"We spend too much time inward instead of with the community."

In February of this year, Asha Sharma took over as CEO of Xbox following the departure of Phil Spencer. Her appointment raised eyebrows at the time as fans questioned Asha's credibility. For one thing, she had been the President of Microsoft's CoreAI initiative; for another, her social media posts were leading some to think she was using AI to formulate all of her content. In the months since her appointment, however, Asha has been aggressively doing what she can to win back fans and convince the public that she is sincere in her efforts to right the sinking ship that is Xbox.

Besides directly addressing the concern that her social media presence was little more than ChatGPT prompts, Sharma has also been busy making moves to set the table for the future of Xbox. Whether it's slapping Xbox back into their corporate email addresses, revealing that the next Xbox console (Project Helix) is in development, or discussing the need for console exclusives, there's no question that Sharma is at least trying to make things better. Now, we've learned that Xbox's next move is going to be the removal of Gaming Copilot for the company's console offerings.

Sharma says that Xbox is restructuring, with an eye towards "[building] a platform that is affordable, personal, and open by staying close to the work and the people we serve." Sharma also says that "Right now, it is too hard to ship impact quickly. We spend too much time inward instead of with the community, and we lack the depth we need in some of the fundamentals." Talk about candor—this writer certainly can't remember the last time he heard a corporation or representative of a company so open about failing.

And let's face it, it's hard to paint what Xbox has been doing the past couple of console generations as anything but failing, but that's a story for another day. Sharma has repositioned a number of Xbox executives in new roles, and emphasized that the goal for Xbox moving forward is "increasing daily active players, prioritizing improvements in hardware, content, experiences, and services." Xbox will also be jettisoning its Gaming Cpoliot software, with Sharma saying "you'll see us begin to retire features that don't align with where we're headed. We will begin winding down Copilot on mobile and will stop development of Copilot on console." Copilot is a "gaming sidekick" AI that is currently in beta and had been announced to be coming to console... but not anymore.

Honestly, is anyone really heartbroken to see Copilot go? This move, among the others listed above, suggests that Xbox is starting to think leaner and focusing on what really matters. Whether or not this will lead to positive growth for the company, however, remains to be seen, but few would argue that this isn't a step in the right direction.
