Tony Stark is entering a "brutal new era."
Gerry Duggan's recent Iron Man run ended with a whimper, concluding its abortive Tony Stark/Emma Frost "marriage" and moving the character beyond his ties to the X-Men's much-maligned Krakoa era. It's time to wipe the slate clean and take Tony in a new direction, but after many failed attempts in recent years, the question has lingered as to who, if anyone, can get the job done. It seems that Marvel has decided that writer Spencer Ackerman and artist Julius Ohta will be the ones to relaunch the series with Iron Man #1 on October 23, 2024.
Marvel says that Tony is back in charge of Stark Unlimited and has Roxxon and A.I.M. gunning for him in this new direction for the character. Here's a bit from the press release:
Roxxon and A.I.M. team up to take on Stark Unlimited! But they’re ready for the old Tony Stark. This one? He’s a lot angrier than he used to be. Iron Man is going to war! New armor, old enemies, and unbelievable twists abound in this fresh take on a fury-powered Iron Man!
How Tony's armor will be redesigned is typically one of the biggest questions that fans have whenever the series gets a reboot or a new creative team, and this time around is no different. However, in a departure, Tony's suit is being dubbed the Improvised Iron Man, a suit that will be gradually tinkered with and added to as the story unfolds. It's notably low-tech looking compared to previous iterations of the armor, evoking an almost steampunk look.
Tony is described as being "a lot angrier than he used to be" and that he is "more than willing to fight back, play dirty, and unleash every bit of his intellect" in order to take down his enemies. Iron Man, despite being arguably the most beloved character of Marvel's cinematic universe, hasn't had a solid comic book run in ages. Will this finally turn things around for Tony Stark? We'll find out when Iron Man #1 hits comic book shops this fall.
