This second remake of the original Gear of War marks the series' debut on a Sony console.

The original Gears of War is making a second comeback. Dubbed Gears of War: Reloaded, this second remake (remember Gears of War: Ultimate back in 2016?) is promising a number of improvements and upgrades compared to other versions of the game. This includes:

  • 4K resolution

  • 60 FPS in Campaign

  • 120 FPS in Multiplayer

  • High Dynamic Range (HDR)

  • Dolby Vision & 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos

  • 7.1.4 3D Spatial Audio

  • Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)

  • 4K assets and remastered textures

  • Enhanced post-processing visual effects

  • Improved shadows and reflections

  • Super resolution with improved anti-aliasing

  • Zero loading screens during Campaign

Two-player co-op is back for the campaign, naturally, as well as the game's eight-player Versus Multiplayer mode. What's more, however, is the fact that cross-platform functionality is supported... but why, you ask? Well, because Gears of War: Reloaded is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5 on August 26, 2025. That's right, Gear of War is making its PlayStation debut.

We mentioned Gears of War: Ultimate up above, and while we asked if you all remembered the game, take note that Microsoft definitely hasn't forgotten it. That 2016 remaster might be your lucky ticket to playing Reloaded at no extra charge—those who bought that version of Gears of War prior to yesterday's announcement (9 AM PST on 05.05.25, to be precise) can upgrade to Reloaded at no extra charge. Everyone else, alas, will have to fork over $39.99 on launch day, or access the game via a Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

It's exciting news for Gears fans that have been starved of content since 2020's Hivebusters expansion for Gears 5. Reloaded is being developed by The Coalition in conjunction with Sumo Interactive and Disbelief. There's no trailer just yet, but once one drops we'll share it with you. In the meanwhile, let's all just bask in looking forward to the return of Marcus Fenix and his brothers in COG.
