Including a total obscurity from 1997 that few ever played.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is the latest retro compilation from the wizards at Digital Eclipse. The studio has become quite renowned for its thorough ports of classic games, as well as robust featurettes and archival materials detailing the history of their creation. Atari 50: The Celebration is a prime example of how far Digital Eclipse goes with its work, including reviving games that were prototypes or never full released to the public.
As such, it's with more than a little excitement that fans have been awaiting the launch of Legacy Kollection. Alas, the exact release date remains a mystery (more on that below), but we do now know exactly which games will be kollected (a pun!). Take a look:
And here's the roster:
Mortal Kombat – 1992 (Arcade | SNES | Genesis | Game Boy | Game Gear)
Mortal Kombat II – 1993 (Arcade | SNES | Genesis | Game Boy | 32X)
Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995 (Arcade | SNES | Genesis)
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995 (Arcade | WaveNet Arcade | SNES)
Mortal Kombat Trilogy – 1996 (PlayStation)
Mortal Kombat 4 – 1997 (Arcade)
Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero – 1997 (PlayStation)
Mortal Kombat Special Forces – 2000 (PlayStation)
Mortal Kombat Advance – 2001 (Game Boy Advance)
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance – 2002 (Game Boy Advance)
Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition – 2003 (Game Boy Advance)
Nestled in among the usual suspects one might have expected to find in a compilation of this ilk is the true rarity that is the WaveNet version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. This prototype was tested in the San Francisco and Chicago areas via a the WaveNet network which ran off of T1 broadband lines routed directly to Midway's headquarters. These arcade machines were played by few and this iteration of UMK3 has never been made available beyond that small sampling nearly 30 years ago—until now.
Talk about impressive. Again, this dedication that Digital Eclipse has to game preservation is incredibly impressive and will be a boon to future generations of players. While we do know that a physical edition of Legacy Kollection is slated for a December 12 ship date, but the digital edition is currently a mystery. Once we learn more we'll share it with all of you, but in the interim, definitely keep this one on your radar. In the meantime, if you're interested in getting a pre-order of the physical edition, hit up this link.
