The author finally reacts to the ongoing controversy.

Note there will be graphic descriptions of alleged sexual abuse in this article.
Recently, Vulture did an exposé on writer Neil Gaiman, delving deeper into the various accusations of sexual abuse being levied by numerous women across multiple decades. While the Vulture piece came out last week, the story itself has been percolating since May of 2024 when Tortoise Media first reported on the controversy. Now, with the Vulture article out in the wild, it's become too big of a story to ignore.
Case in point, Gaiman himself has finally chosen to speak up and react to the allegations. Coming via the author's website, Gaiman denies that he has never committed sexual assault or abuse, and that he has never engaged in "non-consensual sexual activity with anyone." Here's a bit more from Gaiman's statement:
As I read through this latest collection of accounts, there are moments I half-recognise and moments I don’t, descriptions of things that happened sitting beside things that emphatically did not happen. I’m far from a perfect person, but I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.

I went back to read the messages I exchanged with the women around and following the occasions that have subsequently been reported as being abusive. These messages read now as they did when I received them – of two people enjoying entirely consensual sexual relationships and wanting to see one another again. At the time I was in those relationships, they seemed positive and happy on both sides.
Some of the horrible stories now being told simply never happened, while others have been so distorted from what actually took place that they bear no relationship to reality. I am prepared to take responsibility for any missteps I made. I’m not willing to turn my back on the truth, and I can't accept being described as someone I am not, and cannot and will not admit to doing things I didn't do.
While Gaiman denies the reports, it is notable that there are overwhelming similarities between the women's accounts of what happened, suggesting patterns of behavior and abuse that date back nearly 40 years. That's quite a lot of happenstance. The women have accused Gaiman of coercing them into sex through various forms of pressure and intimidation, including housing in the case of one woman and her children, demanding to be called "master" during sex with another, and even compelling one woman to lick her own feces.
However things ultimately shake out for Gaiman when or if any of these accusations ever lead to a courtroom, there has been significant damage done to the writer's reputation, particularly given his outspoken nature regarding feminism and the treatment of women in creative spaces. Multiple projects involving Gaiman have been postponed, truncated, or even outright canceled in the wake of these allegations. It doesn't seem likely that this will change anytime soon.
