The mystery of Emio is just beginning!
Nintendo surprised everyone last week when it released an enigmatic teaser trailer featuring an ominous figure in a trench coat wearing a paper bag over his head with a sinister smile scrawled across the front. Dubbed Emio, no one knew quite what to expect other than that it was a rare M-rated Nintendo game. Now, we finally have a better idea of what to expect, as Nintendo has announced Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club. It comes to Nintendo Switch on August 29, 2024.
In celebration of the announcement, Nintendo has release the following interview (which is unfortunately age-restricted) with producer Yoshio Sakamoto, who many know as the creator of Metroid:
Here's a bit more about the game from Nintendo:
In Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, a student has been found dead in a chilling fashion, his head covered with a paper bag with an eerie smiling face drawn on it. This unsettling visage bears a striking resemblance to a recurring clue in a string of unsolved murders from 18 years ago, as well as Emio (the Smiling Man), a killer of urban legend who is said to grant his victims “a smile that will last forever.”
Play the role of an assistant private investigator with Utsugi Detective Agency, where you are tasked with helping police solve this crime. Along the way, scrutinize the clues and testimonies you gather for potential connections to the gruesome events of the past.
This is the first all-new Famicom Detective Club game in 35 years. The first two games, Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir and Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Who Stands Behind were both remastered and released in May of 2021 on Nintendo Switch. It was the first time that the series had ever been officially localized outside of Japan; it's nice to see that Western fans won't have to wait so long for this sequel.
Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club is confirmed to have a physical release with an MSRP of $49.99. However, the collector's edition that's coming to Japan has not been confirmed for the West. If that changes, we'll be sure to let you know.
