The illustrator was known for co-creating Planetary, as well as iconic runs on Astonishing X-Men and Captain America.
John Cassaday has died at the age of 52. It feels very strange typing those words, as Cassaday was an artist whose work I adored as a comic book fan, and given how young the artist was. The news was shared by his sister on her Facebook page:
Cassaday had been admitted to the ICU at New York's Mt. Sinai West Hospital this past Monday. The nature of his condition isn't currently known beyond word from his sister that the issue seemed to be related to his brain.
Cassaday leaves behind an incredible legacy in the world of comic books. He co-created Planetary with Warren Ellis, had spectacular runs on Astonishing X-Men with Joss Whedon and Marvel Knights Captain America with John Ney Rieber, and helped to sell 100 million copies of Star Wars #1 back in 2015, making it the highest-selling American comic book that year. Cassaday also did work as a director and actor, among other accomplishments.
For this writer, Cassaday's stint on Astonishing X-Men is among some of the finest work ever done with the franchise. I got a lot of inspiration from Cassaday's unique, gorgeous style. The industry has lost one of its best. We offer our condolences to the Cassaday family during this time.
