It's the first volume since the passing of series creator Kentaro Miura.
Berserk creator Kentaro Miura passed away in May of 2021, sending shockwaves through the manga community. The mangaka had been working on his dark-fantasy series since 1989 and was still producing volumes all the way up until his death. After his passing, Miura's lifelong friend and fellow maga creator Kouji Mori announced that he would be working with Studio Maga to continue the Berserk story. Fans have been curious when the next installment in the story would be locallized and brought to the West, and now we know: March 18, 2025 (bookstores) and March 19, 2025 (comic book shops).
Publisher Dark Horse says that volume 42 will ship at the same size as previous editions, so it will line up nicely with the rest of the books on your shelf. Here's a synopsis of what to expect from the next installment in the series:
The shocking appearance of Griffith on Elf Island has provoked rage and terror in Guts and Casca, and carved a rift into the enchanted isle itself, setting loose a corrosive horde of devourers from beneath the earth! If the Black Swordsman cannot rely upon even his legendary blade, then escape by ship seems the only hope for survival…but not everyone is leaving Elf Island together!
Just note that if you've never read Berserk before, let's just say it's... intense. Very bloody, lots of nudity, sexual violence, and so on. How Mori will continue on that part of the series' legacy is something that many readers are likely curious to find out. We'll see what fans think when volume 42 hits stores next spring.
