SEGA alleges the company infringed on multiple patents.
SEGA is suing Japanese smartphone game developer Bank of Innovations for ¥1 billion. SEGA is alleging that Bank of Innovations is infringing on multiple patents held by the company, and is also seeking an injunction against the studio's RPG Memento Mori, among other games. Bank of Innovations said it accepted the complaint on October 21, 2024.
The crux of the suit seems to revolve around specific mechanics that Bank of Innovation utilized in games like Memento Mori and the now-defunct Phantom Beast Contract Cryptract, specifically pertaining to things like card fusion and "control media." For its part, Bank of Innovation states that it doesn't believe it's in violation of SEGA's patents and will defend itself, but also acknowledges that losing the suit would be financially devastating.
