With its demise, Sony's Spider-Man spinoffs finally come to an end.
Kraven the Hunter failed to bag his prey this past weekend. Debuting on December 13, the three-day haul for the film was a paltry $11 million against a budget reported to be north of $110 million. Ouch. The film is the latest entry in Sony's Spider-Man spinoff films, a range of movies that oddly chose not to feature the famous webhead. Needless to say, this didn't bode well from the offset, and the end result, outside of the Venom films, has been a string of nearly unwatchable dreck in the forms of Morbius, Madame Web, and now Kraven the Hunter.
Recently, Sony had revealed it would no longer be making Spider-Man spinoffs, seemingly in response to Kraven not tracking well for its opening weekend. All focus on the studio now seems to be placed on the upcoming Spider-Man 4 film with Marvel Studios. Given the abysmal reception to Kraven, it's likely for the best that Sony move on from this strategy and finally start giving fans what they want from the Spider-Man brand. Recent successes like the MCU Spider-Man and Spider-Verse films should help to guide the studio in the right direction.
