"Comic-Con is part of San Diego’s identity."

There had been some rumblings in recent years that San Diego Comic-Con International might be dropping the "San Diego" bit and moving to greener pastures. This follows years of San Diego slowly dwindling away under its current leadership, with a rampant rise in homelessness and crime making the once-pristine city a much less desirable place to visit. Well, it seems for now those concerns have been pushed to the back-burner, as San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria announced that Comic-Con International will remain the city through 2027.

Comic-Con is part of San Diego’s identity, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to announce that it will remain here through 2027. This event is not just a celebration of creativity and fandom – it’s a major economic driver for our city, supporting local businesses and showcasing San Diego on a global stage. We’re proud to continue this incredible partnership and look forward to welcoming fans from all over the world.

This is welcome news to retailers and restaurants all throughout the city that benefit greatly from the presence of the convention. However, the continued relationship between Comic-Con and San Diego will likely hinge on the continued development of the city and the wellbeing of attendees in the future. Last year, 14 people were arrested in a human trafficking sting conducted at the event.
