A one-time powerhouse is gone.

If you're of a certain age, you likely have a lot of fun memories associated with the games produced by BioWare. Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Baldur's Gate—when you stop and think about how many different pieces of software came from this studio over the 30 years it was in operation, it's pretty staggering. But at a certain point, things started to change, and not for the better.

Multiple factors played into the decline. Mainstays of the company like co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, Mass Effect creator Casey Hudson and lead writer Drew Karpyshyn, and Dragon Age writer David Gaider, among others, started departing, which didn't help. Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2017 was the beginnig of the decline in terms of product; a flawed game that demonstrated BioWare's focus was starting to shift from storytelling and gameplay first to identity politics and social messaging first. Anthem in 2019 suffered from more banal, but no less damning, problems like mismanagement and a directionless development cycle. But the real nail in the coffin was Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Veilguard might have been a critical darling, but it was a sales disaster for EA. Veilguard, ostensibly set in a dark fantasy world, was mired in modern progressive ideology to the detriment of the gameplay. Players were lectured on things like preferred pronouns in-game, something that left many annoyed and others wholly exasperated. Instead of relishing in slaying dragons in a medieval setting, players were being subjected to content for the sake of ideology and nothing else. Not soon after BioWare suffered major layoffs and the question became when the studio would be shuttered, not if.

And now, the unthinkable has finally happened: BioWare is no more. EA laid off the remaining 50 workers and the studio put out a statement via its official X account to announce the closure. If you had told my friends and I 20 years ago that in 2026 BioWare would be shut down due to a string of failed projects and the next Mass Effect would be going on hiatus, we would have looked at you like a space alien. It's astonishing to see such a storied studio meet a whimpering end like this. In fairness, the BioWare that fans remember from the glory days of Xbox 360 and PlayStation has been gone for a while, but it's a saddening end nonetheless.
